Description
This is an original sculpted relief plaque depicting Admiral Togo Heihachiro, one of the most celebrated naval commanders in modern Japanese history.
Togo Heihachiro (1848–1934) served as Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet during the Russo-Japanese War and achieved a decisive victory at the Battle of Tsushima (1905).
This victory shocked the Western world and established Japan as a major naval power. Togo later attained the rank of Marshal Admiral, becoming a national symbol during the early Shōwa period.
⸻
Artistic & Historical Context
The plaque was produced in 1930 (Shōwa 5), while Admiral Togo was still alive, during a period when commemorative works honoring national figures were widely created for display in public institutions and private collections.
The portrait is rendered in a high-relief sculptural style, with detailed modeling of facial features, naval uniform, and decorations.
The depth and realism indicate that this is not a mass-produced item, but a carefully executed commemorative work.
⸻
Sculptor & Attribution
The relief is sculpted by Masakichi Hata, an active Japanese sculptor from the Taishō to early Shōwa era, known for producing commemorative portraits and official relief works.
The reverse bears an original period label crediting Nakajo Shigeei as the commissioner or producer, suggesting organized and formal production rather than private hobby work.
