1925 Southern Hotel (Jackson, TN) & Hotel Latham (Hopkinsville, KY) Illustrated Envelope – A.D. Noe & Son – Historic Americana

Offered here is an original, unposted 1925-era illustrated hotel envelope, measuring approximately 6.5 x 4 inches, steeped in Southern hotel, transportation, and early 20th-century American history.

This envelope is empty and unused, with no contents enclosed, allowing the artwork and provenance to take center stage.

🏨 Front Illustration – Southern Hotel, Jackson, Tennessee

The front of the envelope features a beautifully detailed engraved illustration of the Southern Hotel in Jackson, Tennessee, labeled:

“Southern Hotel – American Plan – Jackson, Tenn. – 120 Rooms – 60 Baths”

The artwork depicts the impressive multi-story hotel with wraparound porches, period automobiles parked along the street, people, and architectural flourishes typical of the 1920s. The image conveys the Southern Hotel’s role as a major civic and social landmark in Jackson during the early automobile era.

Handwritten in period ink is the address to:

Miss Mary Loyce Adams
U.S. Veterans Hospital
Jefferson Barracks

This handwritten address adds a deeply human layer to the piece, directly tying it to one of the most historically significant military medical facilities in the United States.

🏨 Reverse Illustration – Dual Hotel Advertising

The reverse side is especially striking, featuring two finely rendered hotel illustrations side by side:

  • Southern Hotel – Jackson, Tennessee

  • Hotel Latham – Hopkinsville, Kentucky

Between the two images is printed:

“A.D. NOE & SON – Owners”
“A.D. NOE, JR. – Manager”

Both hotels are identified as American Plan, each offering 120 rooms and 60 baths, reflecting the scale and ambition of regional luxury hotels in the 1920s. Period automobiles, street scenes, people, and architectural detail are crisply engraved, making this envelope feel more like a miniature promotional broadside than ordinary stationery.

Historically, A.D. Noe & Son were prominent hotel operators of the era, and their ownership of both properties firmly places this envelope in the mid-1920s, consistent with known records.

🏥 Addressed to Jefferson Barracks – A Historic U.S. Veterans Hospital

The envelope was addressed to Jefferson Barracks, near St. Louis, Missouri — one of the oldest and most historically important U.S. military installations, later serving as a major Veterans Hospital. Jefferson Barracks played a crucial role in the care of American veterans following World War I, adding significant historical weight to this otherwise modest piece of paper.
