DESCRIPTION:
Large handwritten diary kept from 1924 through July 1927, written extensively throughout a repurposed accounting ledger. Measures approximately 8.75 x 14 inches with 189 numbered pages, approximately 164 pages containing handwritten content.
This is a substantial, highly detailed diary with entries covering everyday family and household life over several years. The writer records washing, ironing, sewing, cleaning, cooking and baking, gardening, shopping, church and Sunday school, family visits, illnesses, deaths, funerals, birthdays, holidays, school activities, dancing, movies, automobile trips and social gatherings.
The ledger format is particularly interesting. Some pages retain accounting headings and entries including Accounts Receivable, Cash, Accounts Payable, Expense, Savings Account, Copyrights and individual account names, while much of the book was subsequently filled with diary writing.
Travel is documented in considerable detail. A lengthy 1926 automobile trip records travel through Kentucky, including Mammoth Cave, and onward through other locations. Later entries discuss preparations for and travel on another trip in 1927, including references to Michigan. The diary also contains numerous references to Birmingham, Burleighs, churches, clubs, theaters, schools and named friends and relatives.
Several entries are unusually personal. The writer records sickness and deaths among family and acquaintances, including funeral travel and extended descriptions of family reactions. Other entries document Christmas, Thanksgiving, birthdays, church services, children\'s activities and the routines of domestic life during the mid-1920s.
The handwriting is generally legible and entries frequently fill most or all of a page. Some pages have corrections, crossed-out passages and occasional ink spots/stains as shown. Later unused ledger pages remain blank.
Bound in a large black and burgundy ledger binding. Exterior shows substantial age and use, including corner and edge wear, surface marks and a prominent circular mark on the front cover. Interior pages show expected age, handling, occasional stains/ink marks and other wear. Please examine photographs carefully for condition.
An excellent primary-source record of American domestic, family, social, religious and travel life during the 1920s, with an unusually large amount of original handwritten content.
