Original Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Company Engineer’s Time and Trip Report, Form T 75-A, printed “8-20,” indicating an August 1920 form revision.
This unused operational railroad document was designed for completion by a locomotive engineer at the close of each day’s work. The main report records the train and engine numbers, class of service, stations traveled, crew names, hours on duty, actual mileage, mileage claimed, rate, departure and arrival times, and final release of the locomotive.
The attached engineer’s stub repeats the essential trip information, including engine number, division, origin, destination, mileage, number of cars, train number, conductor, engineman, and fireman. Printed instructions directed the engineer to submit the report to the master mechanic or enginehouse foreman for certification and forwarding to the superintendent.
The class-of-service instructions specifically include passenger, freight, work, wreck, roustabout, mine, and yard service. The form also records when the engine was placed on the ash pit or designated track at the end of the workday—a particularly evocative detail from the steam-locomotive era.
The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, commonly called the Lackawanna or DL&W, was a major northeastern railroad connecting the anthracite region of Pennsylvania with New Jersey, New York City, and Buffalo. The company’s surviving business and operating records are recognized as an important resource for documenting American railroad management and operations.
A scarce piece of authentic 1920 steam-era railroad operating ephemera with excellent display and research interest for collectors of DL&W, Lackawanna Railroad, locomotive crew, railroad labor, and industrial history material.
