ALL PHOTOS SHOWN.
Original identified early-20th-century photograph album belonging to Sophie Zimmers, with substantial Williamsport, Pennsylvania content and photographs dating at least as early as 1919. Album dimensions were not provided; please refer to the listing photographs for its overall format and scale. The album has brown cloth-covered boards lettered “Photographs” in gold and black paper leaves secured with a cord binding.
This is especially appealing because the owner is identified within the album rather than being an anonymous family collection. A handwritten card mounted inside identifies Sophie Zimmers, and a second piece of original ephemera—a Young Women’s Christian Association, Chester, Pa., Physician’s Certificate for Swimming—is also filled out in the name Sophie Zimmers, providing additional provenance.
The album contains an interesting mixture of original family snapshots, portraits, children, women, automobiles, outings, travel photographs, local Pennsylvania views and commercial photographic views, together with period ephemera.
A particularly strong portion documents Williamsport, Pennsylvania and the surrounding area. Visible subjects include the Susquehanna Trail near Williamsport, Mosquito Valley, Sylvan Dell Park, Devils Cave, Masonic Temple, churches, Park Hotel and P.R.R. Station, Brown Memorial Library, Williamsport Post Office, City Hall, YMCA and other buildings and scenery. There is also a view identified as the Doylestown Home for Deaf Mutes, Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
Additional period ephemera includes a New City Hotel, Williamsport, Penna. card and a Merchants Hotel, Reading, Pa. piece. One mounted photograph is visibly dated 1919.
The personal photographs show women in period clothing, children, family and social groups, an early automobile, outdoor scenes and several individual portraits. One photograph shows women posed at what appears to be an East End Park entrance/sign. Another section incorporates an unusual colorful paper cutout of a little boy, with separate head, hands, bow tie and legs arranged among the album pages and ultimately assembled into a full decorative figure.
Overall the album provides a nice combination of identified genealogy, Pennsylvania local history, Williamsport architecture and scenery, women’s history, family photography, travel and period ephemera.
Authentic period piece related to family, historyor local heritage - well-suited for historical collections, genealogical /genealogy research, or museum acquisition.Vintage or Antique.
