Exceptional, oversized original antique photograph depicting the USS Missouri (BB-11) naval football team, featuring uniformed players, naval officers, an elaborate trophy, two dated footballs, and an American flag.Measuring approximately 30 inches wide by 10 inches high, this impressive panoramic-style photograph captures an early American naval football team posed aboard a warship, with the ship’s deck, rigging, and structural details clearly visible.Historical SignificanceThe USS Missouri (BB-11) was a Maine-class battleship commissioned in 1903. She participated in the famous Great White Fleet’s circumnavigation of the globe (1907–1909) and subsequently served in the Atlantic Fleet.During the early 20th century, football became an important part of organized athletic competition within the United States Navy. Battleships maintained teams that competed against other vessels and naval installations. The USS Missouri was among the battleships participating in these competitions. Contemporary accounts document the Missouri playing the USS Nebraska in a battleship football championship contest in January 1910.This photograph offers a remarkable visual record of that era of naval athletics.Particularly Notable FeaturesTwo Dated Footballs — 1912 and 1913At the center of the photograph are two early leather footballs bearing inscriptions referencing Philadelphia and the Navy Yard, with dates of 1912 and 1913.Their prominent placement suggests that the photograph commemorates significant team achievements or successive seasons of competition. An elaborate trophy stands between the footballs, forming the centerpiece of the portrait. Its presence further suggests an organized naval athletic competition or commemorative occasion. The players wear period football jerseys, padded or striped trousers, and long athletic stockings, illustrating the appearance of organized American football before the widespread adoption of modern protective equipment. The group includes uniformed naval officers at either end, along with an older uniformed figure standing centrally behind the players.
Shipboard SettingThe photograph was taken on the wooden deck of a naval vessel. Visible cables, rigging, structural supports, and shipboard equipment provide additional historical interest.Dating and AttributionThe photograph is associated with the USS Missouri (BB-11) and the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The football inscriptions include the dates 1912 and 1913, indicating that the photograph dates from 1913 or later. The exact date of the photograph, identities of the individual players, and the specific competition represented by the trophy have not been conclusively established. The USS Missouri was temporarily decommissioned at Philadelphia in September 1912 and recommissioned in March 1914, an interesting historical detail relevant to the photograph’s dating and naval association.
