Offered is an original handwritten City of Ocala, Florida ordinance record book dating primarily from 1911-1914. The volume measures approximately 8.5 x 15 inches and contains 96 handwritten pages of official municipal ordinances followed by nearly 300 blank rag paper pages. The paper is exceptionally flexible and sturdy with a quality feel typical of early 20th century record books. The spine is titled "City of Ocala" with "Ordinances" and "1910-", and the binding bears the imprint of Walker, Evans & Cogswell Co., Manufacturing Stationers, Charleston, S.C.
This is not a commonplace book but an official manuscript record of enacted city legislation, written in a careful clerk's hand and signed throughout by city officials. Early entries include amendments regulating the operation and speed of automobiles, restrictions on minors operating motor vehicles, authority for construction of the city's Water Works, street improvements including sidewalks and curbs, licensing regulations, taxation schedules, and numerous municipal business ordinances.
Among the subjects documented are:
- Automobile speed regulations and operation within Ocala.
- Water Works bond issue and financing.
- Sidewalk and curb construction ordinances.
- Municipal licensing and business regulations.
- Annual occupational license tax schedules.
- Licenses for banks, hotels, contractors, photographers, physicians, plumbers, printers, restaurants, railroads, moving pictures, laundries, machine shops, manufacturers, carnivals, theaters, drays, livery stables, pawn brokers, shooting galleries, billiard halls, saleeers, automobiles for hire, and many other occupations.
- Official certifications, approvals, mayoral signatures, and publication attestations.
Several ordinances retain full certification language showing first, second, and third readings before City Council, approval by the mayor, and certification by H. C. Sistrunk, City Clerk, providing excellent documentation of the municipal legislative process.
The manuscript concludes after page 96, with the remaining approximately 300 numbered pages left unused, making this an attractive and substantial archival ledger.
Condition is good overall for its age. The leather-covered binding shows expected wear, rubbing, losses to the leather, and edge wear as shown in the photographs. The binding remains sound, the rag paper pages are supple and sturdy, and the handwritten text remains bold and highly legible. Please examine all photographs carefully for complete condition details.
