William S. Tilden spent his life in Medfield, working as a church organist and music teacher while serving as the town\'s unofficial historian. He became the first president of the Medfield Historical Society and wrote the definitive History of the Town of Medfield, Massachusetts, 1650-1886, still the standard reference on the town today.
This card catches him managing a real piece of literary gatekeeping. Helen M. Winslow, then editor of the Boston Transcript\'s Woman\'s Club Department, wanted to publish excerpts of a historical manuscript referred to only as \"the H. Adams paper\" in the paper\'s Saturday edition. Tilden refused to authorize it himself and deferred the decision to the manuscript\'s actual custodian, very likely Julius Herbert Tuttle, the Massachusetts Historical Society\'s longtime librarian and president of the Dedham Historical Society.
Winslow went on to found the Boston Authors\' Club three years later, in 1899, alongside Julia Ward Howe. Tuttle spent decades more as steward of New England\'s historical archives at the Massachusetts Historical Society, a role he held until his death.
