๐Ÿ—ž๏ธ HARPERS WEEKLY ยท December 12, 1896
Complete Issue ยท New historically significant and artistically exceptional issue โ€” a Frederic Remington full front-page illustration of the Denver City Battery at Camp McIntire during the Leadville, Colorado silver miners strike, combined with a double-page centerfold of six strike photographs and three additional text photographs. A primary document of one of the most significant American labor conflicts of the Gilded Age, rendered by the eras most celebrated FREDERIC REMINGTON โ€” LEADVILLE STRIKE FRONT FULL FRONT PAGE โ€” FREDERIC REMINGTON: \"LEADVILLES DETERMINED STRIKE โ€” THE DENVER CITY BATTERY AT CAMP McINTIRE\"
A full front-page Remington illustration of the Denver City Battery โ€” the Colorado National Guard artillery unit deployed to Camp McIntire during the Leadville silver miners strike of 1896. The Leadville strike was one of the most significant and violent labor conflicts of the Gilded Age โ€” silver miners at Leadville, Colorado (once the richest silver mining district in America) had walked out in June 1896 in a dispute over wages as silver prices collapsed following the defeat of Bryans free silver campaign. Mine owners brought in replacement workers; the striking miners responded with violence; and Colorado Governor Albert McIntire declared martial law and sent in the National Guard, establishing Camp McIntire as the military headquarters for the occupation of the city. The strike lasted nine months and ended in defeat for the miners, accelerating the decline of Leadville as a silver mining center. Remingtons front-page illustration of the military artillery deployment captures the militarization of the American labor dispute with his characteristic eye for military detail and drama. An original Remington print โ€” not a reproduction โ€” in a complete original issue. A significant piece of American labor history, Colorado mining history, and Remingtons LEADVILLE STRIKE โ€” TEXT AND DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD โ€” SIX PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE LEADVILLE STRIKE
A double-page centerfold of six photographs documenting the Leadville strike โ€” the strikers, the soldiers, the mines, and the streets of one of the most storied mining towns in the American West during one of its most dramatic moments. Published just weeks after the defeat of Bryans free silver campaign had crushed the political hopes of silver miners everywhere, these photographs capture Leadville at its most desperate and historically charged moment. A primary photographic document of American labor and mining history.๐Ÿ“ฐ TEXT AND THREE ADDITIONAL PHOTOGRAPHS โ€” \"LEADVILLES DETERMINED STRIKE\"
Text and three additional photographs providing comprehensive coverage of the strike โ€” together with the Remington front page and the six-photo centerfold, making this the most comprehensive single-issue document of the Leadville strike in the American illustrated photograph every page of every issue so you can inspect the condition closely before purchasing.
