Note and newspaper clippings regarding Colorado's first election as a state, likely by Jerome Chaffee, ten years before his death.
"Importance of the first state elections. Its bearing in the general election. Policy of the state to be inaugurated and determined. The duty of every citizen to examine the political situation. The importance of every young man to examine before casting his first vote...The Dem party inaugurated the war for the destruction of the Union "as a party". The republican party fought as a party to pursue the division both in the field and the council of the nation. Every man who fought with the Confederate army was a Dem and under the leadership of the Dem party. No rep. could have found fighting against the Union.
It is wise to place to the control of this nation in the power of those who so lately attempted to destroy it in the bloody war of the Rebellion.
The Dem party is a fraud upon the people. It is a fraud upon the colored race. The Dem party have always been controlled by the south. Opposed to all the grand results of the war. Hendricks voted v.s. all the amendments of the Constitution."
