The Texas Declaration of Independence was officially adopted on March 2, 1836, by 59 delegates at Washington-on-the-Brazos, formally creating the Republic of Texas and severing ties with Mexico.

  • Author: Authored primarily by George C. Childress as head of a five-member drafting committee.
  • Signatories: Signed by 59 delegates, which included three Tejanos (José Antonio Navarro, José Francisco Ruiz, and Lorenzo de Zavala).
  • Main Grievances: Condemned President Antonio López de Santa Anna for overthrowing the Mexican Constitution of 1824, abolishing civil liberties, denying trial by jury, and failing to secure public education or religious freedom.
  • Distribution: Five handwritten copies were sent to regional towns (Bexar, Goliad, Nacogdoches, Brazoria, and San Felipe), alongside 1,000 printed handbills.
  • Resolution: Paved the way for the ultimate victory at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836.
