• ABOUT this specific envelope's graphic image:
Design and Symbolism
- The Visual Metaphor: The illustration features a giant goblet or whiskey glass. Inside the glass is a slumped, dead or incapacitated Confederate soldier holding a secession flag. A skeleton (representing Death) hovers menacingly over the top of the glass.
- The Text: The caption reads "SECESSION WHISKEY. One dose warranted to kill, at 40 rods." In the 19th century, a "rod" was a common unit of measurement equal to 16.5 feet (40 rods is exactly one furlong, or 660 feet). The phrase is a dark satirical warning: drinking the "whiskey" of political secession from the United States is instantly lethal, even from a distance.
- The Printer: The tiny vertical text on the left attributes the piece to "D. Murphy's Son, Print. 65 Fulton & 372 Pearl Street, N.Y." D. Murphy's Son was a prominent New York City printer renowned for producing a wide variety of satirical anti-Confederate postal stationery throughout the war.
About Civil War Patriotic Covers:
From the earliest days of the Civil War, designs began to appear on envelopes sold to the public which expressed various kinds of patriotic sentiments and/or negative caricature-like opinions of the enemy, or some other type of related subject. This type of postal expression had never been used to any extent prior to the Civil War. Featuring strong graphic images, these covers expressed patriotic and propagandistic messages. Common images include flags, eagles, soldiers, and portraits and caricatures of famous Civil War figures and others.
ABOUT CONDITION:Most of my Civil War Covers are in "NICE" condition, BUT see scans! While 'NICE' means different things to different folks, to the expert and author William R. Weiss:"a 'NICE' envelope means no facial damage that detracts from the overall appearance.Flaws which might detract could include tears larger than 1/2 inch, stains, creases, reductions.REVERSE flaws will generally NOT detract from value unless a portion is cut out. (Generally)... some minor paper discoloration or reverse flaws such as old mounting evidence or paperadhesions will not detract from value." - - Catalog of Union Civil War Patriotic Covers - Weiss
CONTENT WARNING:
Many items in this collection represent the raw ugliness of historical bigotry and Americanwartime propaganda. We offer these sometimes shocking listings especially for advanced collectors, museums and academic buyers for the purpose of documenting American racial history and radical ideologies; these items serve as historical evidence, not endorsement.
These circa 160+ year-old Civil War period covers do not come from a casual collection — this is research-grade material.
Many of these items are much scarcer than generic patriotic designs. These envelopes represent exceptional Civil War patriotic material, including imaginative allegorical and satirical designs, patriotic tropes and parody, documentation of 19th Century social, political and cultural movements, raoffer nationalism, slavery and abolitionist sentiments, racist imagery, and wartime propaganda.
