American hero and President Dwight David Eisenhower (1890-1969) was an American army general and statesman who served as the 34th president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. During World War II, he was a five-star general in the Army and served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe. He was responsible for planning and supervising the invasion of North Africa in Operation Torch in 1942-43 and the successful invasion of Normandy in 1944-45 from the Western Front.
Offering a fantastic two-piece lot of Eisenhower’s early campaign on the trail in Boston before a huge group of hundreds of supporters and well-wishers, commemorating the race that brought Ike to the White House.
The first is an oversized photograph – 11 x 14 – of Eisenhower’s motorcade, embossed “Boston Post Photo,” in the lower left and taken about two weeks before Eisenhower was elected, and the second being a 7 x 10 TLS, dated October 25, 1952, and signed “Dwight D. Eisenhower” on his name-imprinted letterhead thanking Peter Fuller for donating cars for Eisenhower’s Boston motorcade, and offering his apologies for damage to Fuller’s personally owned car resulting from an exuberant crowd: “I am sorry to learn that your car was so badly damaged in the course of the motorcade...I have learned from experience that the leader of a crusade does receive blows and some dents, and your car was certainly in the front lines with me on October 21, 1952.
Your brother-in-law, Robert Henderson, did a marvelous job of piloting me through the largest and most turbulent street crowds we have yet seen in this campaign.”
Fuller donated all the cars for the motorcade, including his personal Cadillac convertible, which Eisenhower references. Fuller ran his family’s Cadillac dealership. He was the son of Massachusetts Gov. Alvan T. Fuller.
The photograph is a superb image, attached to cardstock possibly for preservation, with minor wear. The letter bears mounting residue on the verso with a slight paper loss, not effecting the writing, in the margins. A wonderful grouping regarding this highly respected U.S. President.
