There are sports decorations, and then there are twelve-inch wooden soldiers who show up carrying drums and looking prepared to lead the entire living room through “On, Wisconsin.” The traditional nutcracker shape gives the piece familiar holiday character without losing the college-football theme. Painted details cover nearly every section of the figure rather than relying on a simple logo and calling it finished. The tall hat immediately establishes the Wisconsin connection. The miniature drum and crossed drumsticks make the drummer theme equally clear. Faux fur adds texture around the hair and beard. Metallic-looking shoulder trim brings a ceremonial uniform feel to the upper body. Gem-style embellishments provide a little unnecessary pageantry, which is precisely the correct amount of pageantry for college football. The football-field base keeps the theme going all the way to the bottom. The football at his feet is a particularly good finishing touch. He works naturally with Wisconsin memorabilia, football collectibles, nutcracker collections, or seasonal décor. More importantly, he looks like he takes both halftime and holiday decorating extremely seriously.
Nutcrackers began as stern little guardians, but somewhere along the road one of them clearly discovered Saturday football. This fellow seems to have traded an old-world palace for Camp Randall and found the career change agreeable. The drum is ready. The sticks are raised. The football is already on the field. All that remains is several thousand people jumping around and making questionable decisions about cheese. There is something wonderfully strange about blending traditional holiday imagery with the ritual and spectacle of college football. Both involve elaborate costumes, repeated songs, fierce loyalties, and adults becoming emotionally invested in things that are objectively a little ridiculous. Perhaps the nutcracker understood the connection before the rest of us did. He can stand watch through football season and remain on duty straight into the holidays without requiring a wardrobe change. Wisconsin collectors will recognize the familiar symbols immediately. Nutcracker collectors get a version with far more personality than the standard palace guard. Football fans get a drummer who never misses the beat because, mercifully, nobody actually has to listen to him practice. And somewhere in Madison, one suspects, he already knows exactly when to start the fight song.
