DescriptionThis is an original prewar Japanese hanging scroll featuring Emperor Hirohito in military uniform together with an Imperial Rescript issued after the First Shanghai Incident of 1932.At the top is the chrysanthemum emblem, the traditional symbol of the Japanese Imperial family, followed by the heading “Imperial Rescript.”The text praises the Japanese Army and Navy forces sent to Shanghai for carrying out their duties in cooperation with one another. The rescript is dated March 16, 1932.For collectors unfamiliar with the event, the First Shanghai Incident was a major armed clash between Japanese and Chinese forces in and around Shanghai from January to March 1932. Japanese naval landing forces and Army units were both involved in the fighting. So what is an “Imperial Rescript”?In simple terms, it was an official statement issued in the Emperor’s name and carried great authority in prewar Japan. That makes this more than just a portrait of Hirohito. It combines:The First Shanghai Incident
Emperor Hirohito
A wartime Imperial message
Imperial Japanese Army and Navy imageryall in one historical display piece. The year 1932 is also important because it came just after the Manchurian Incident and well before the full-scale Second Sino-Japanese War and the Pacific War.For that reason, this scroll offers a look at an earlier stage of Japan’s military expansion in China and how those events were presented to the public at the time.Approximate size: 162 cm × 45 cmThe scroll shows age-related wear, discoloration, folds, and other signs of use consistent with its age. Please review the photos carefully.Recommended for collectors and researchers of:Imperial Japanese military history
