Original U.S. Army WWI-era M1917 Mounted Canteen Cover manufactured by Rock Island Arsenal and clearly dated 1919, together with an original M1910-pattern aluminum canteen. An interesting and much less common variation of early U.S. Army canteen equipment, particularly desirable with the clearly dated Rock Island Arsenal marking.
This is the specialized mounted / cavalry pattern rather than the much more common infantry belt-mounted canteen cover.
Unlike the standard M1910 cover, this pattern does not use the usual double wire belt hook. Instead, the cover incorporates reinforced web attachment loops intended for the mounted carrying arrangement used by cavalry and other mounted troops.
The cover is especially attractive because of the strong arsenal/date marking and unusually well-preserved canvas. It appears remarkably well preserved for an item over 100 years old. It may have seen little or no actual field use.
Please note: the original mounted leather carrying strap, lower tie thong and canteen cup are not present.
An excellent example for a WWI U.S. Army, cavalry, mounted equipment, Rock Island Arsenal, or field gear U.S. Army M1917 mounted canteen cover
