This is a portrait of Canadian Army Captain J. Stuart Allenof Princess Patricia\'s Canadian Light Infantry, commanding officer of the University of North Carolina student battalion.
Size: 3.5\" x 5.5\".Apparently period photo print, circa 1917-1918; likely from a copy negative of a larger captioned original.
Background: UNC students formed a volunteer brigade three months before the United States entered the World War I. The War Department could not supply an officer, so President Edward Kidder Graham recruited one from Canada. Allen taught bombing, bayonet fighting, musketry, signaling, military engineering and trench warfare during the fall 1917 and spring 1918 sessions. The government-run Students\' Army Training Corps replaced his course in fall 1918.
Condition: Strong tone and contrast. Light edge and corner wear. Mild curl. Verso blank, with four patches of black album paper residue and light toning.
