ORIGINAL CIRCA 1918 WWI-ERA REAL PHOTO POSTCARD — IDENTIFIED KENTUCKY MARINE — DIRECT FAMILY PROVENANCE

This is an original circa 1918 real photo postcard (RPPC), measuring approximately 3½" x 5½", printed directly onto postcard stock with a divided-back postcard reverse. The reverse bears the name "Graham Cowherd" in handwriting, in addition to a later-added identification label confirming the same.

The photograph shows a single serviceman standing before a painted studio backdrop depicting the U.S. Capitol dome, a patriotic scene commonly used by photography studios serving servicemen passing through Washington, D.C. — likely en route to a duty station or point of embarkation. He is dressed in the U.S. Marine Corps service uniform of the WWI period, including the distinctive "Montana peak" campaign hat associated with Marine Corps dress of the era. The man is identified as Graham B. Cowherd of Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

Graham B. Cowherd — WWI Marine Veteran and Kentucky National Guard Officer

Graham Brown Cowherd has a particularly well-documented military history. His death certificate records his World War I service, and Kentucky National Guard historical records provide additional detail: Cowherd enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in April 1918 at age 17 and served overseas with the 6th Regiment, Marines. He was wounded in action on November 10, 1918 — one day before the Armistice — and was subsequently awarded the Purple Heart.

After the war, Cowherd returned to Hopkinsville and became active in the Kentucky National Guard. By 1937 he had risen to the rank of Captain and Company Commander, serving with Company C, 113th Quartermaster Regiment. The 1938National Guard of the State of Kentuckyhistorical publication identifies Cowherd and documents his earlier Marine Corps service and combat wound.

Provenance:This photograph comes directly through the family of Graham B. Cowherd. I am a direct descendant of Cowherd, and this photograph has remained in the family collection for generations — this is the first time it will be offered outside the Cowherd family. The period handwriting on the reverse, naming Cowherd directly, further supports the identification alongside the family's own documentation. Additional identified photographs from this collection are available in my other listings.

This is an especially compelling piece given the identification, Cowherd's documented WWI Marine service, his combat wound and Purple Heart, and his rise to Captain in the Kentucky National Guard.

Condition:This is an original vintage photograph, not a modern reproduction. Very good antique condition for a 108-year-old postcard. The image is clear and crisp with strong contrast. There is typical light edge/corner wear and minor surface wear/toning consistent with age. Please review all photos carefully for exact condition and appearance as they are part of the description.I’m happy to answer any questions or send additional photos upon request.

Shipping: Fast handling — ships same or next business day with calculated shipping and tracking. Delivery estimates are determined by carrier based on the service selected. Once accepted by carrier, transit time is outside of seller control.

Note on shipping cost: Calculated shipping reflects actual carrier rates based on this item’s real packed weight and dimensions.I do not inflate shipping costs and want to get your item to you as cost-effectively as possible while ensuring it arrives safely.
