Vintage Yoruba Ere Ibeji Twin Figures Male Female Pair Carved Wood Statues:
$280.00

OverviewA captivating male and female pair of vintage West African YorubaEre Ibeji(sacred twin) shrine figures, exceptionally dressed in complete traditional ritual adornments. Carved from dense hardwood, both statues display majestic high-crested hairstyles (irun agbe), facial scarification marks, and expressive features softened by years of ritual handling. Each figure is richly adorned with multi-strand glass trade beads, yellow seed waist beads, shell wristlets, and cloth loincloths. Possessing an authentic ceremonial presence, this matched pair serves as a sophisticated focal installation for Primitive Modern, Wabi-Sabi, Eclectic Gallery, and curated ethnographic art collections.

Cultural & Artistic BackgroundAmong the Yoruba people of West Africa, twins (ibeji) are regarded as sacred beings who bring spiritual blessing and prosperity to their families. In the traditional Yoruba belief system, if a twin passes away, anere ibeji(carved wooden surrogate) is commissioned by a diviner (babalawo) to house the spiritual essence (emi) of the child. The family cares for the sculpture as a living entity—washing, clothing, feeding, and decorating it with palm oil and red camwood powder (osun). The high-crested hairstyle symbolizes spiritual elevated status, while attached cowrie shells (owo) signify wealth and protection. Vintage glass trade beads around the neck reflect family prestige and devotion to theibejispirit.

Condition & Surface Character• Excellent structural integrity with weighted, hand-carved hardwood bases that stand firmly upright. • Rich, multi-layered surface patina featuring traces of traditional red camwood (osun) pigment wash, indigo accents on the headdresses, and smooth handling wear. • Complete ritual embellishments, including multi-colored vintage glass trade beads, seed bead wraps, cowrie shell wrist bundles, and weathered cotton loincloths displaying natural age patina. • Shows authentic signs of age, including subtle wood drying checks, minor pigment loss, and softened facial features resulting from traditional devotional rubbing.
