Vintage large-format celluloid pinback button reading \"YOU\'RE ON CANDID CAMERA\" — the catchphrase of one of the longest-running shows in American television history.
Created by Allen Funt, Candid Camera began life on radio in 1947 as Candid Microphone before moving to television in 1948. It ran as a weekly CBS series through the 1960s and returned in multiple incarnations over the following decades under Funt and later his son Peter. The closing line — \"Smile, you\'re on Candid Camera!\" — entered the language and remains instantly recognizable well beyond the show\'s original audience.
Buttons and badges bearing the phrase were produced as promotional giveaways and were handed out on set to participants revealed at the end of a gag. This is an oversized example measuring approximately 3.5 inches in diameter — considerably larger than the common 1.25″ and 2.25″ novelty sizes, and the kind of piece meant to be seen from across a room.
Standard lithographed paper-under-celluloid construction over a metal shell with a rolled collet edge. Unmarked as to manufacturer or date.
A genuinely worn survivor with strong graphic character and immediate nostalgic recognition. Would display well in a television memorabilia grouping, a photography- or camera-themed collection, or among vintage novelty and slogan pinbacks.
Condition:Used, showing significant age and light exposure. Please review all detailed photos closely, as they form part of this condition description.
Heavy fading to the printed lettering. \"YOU\'RE ON\" remains readable but has faded from its original color to a soft gray-lavender. \"CANDID CAMERA\" on the lower two lines has bleached almost completely away and is now visible only as a faint ghost impression under raking light or close inspection. This is the item\'s dominant flaw and is disclosed prominently — please offer or buy with this understood.
Overall yellowing and toning to the white ground, heaviest around the perimeter.
Scattered surface soiling, small tan and amber stains, and a few tiny dark specks. A single small red fleck is present on the upper field.
Light surface scratches and minor scuffing consistent with handling and storage.
Celluloid covering is intact — no splitting, lifting, flaking, or loss observed.
Shell is round and true. No dents, creases, or crimping to the edge observed. No rust bleed-through observed on the face.
Sold as-is, as described. No returns for the fading, which is fully disclosed above.
