ITEM DESCRIPTIONOverview:Up for sale is an authentic piece of World War II Italian Theater Trench Art This iconic figural letter opener is cast entirely from solid aluminum, giving it a lightweight yet durable design typical of WWII theater field crafts. The handle is sculpted in high relief to depict a nude female pin-up figure, and the flat blade is prominently hand-stamped/inscribed with "Palermo", the capital city of Sicily. These items were popular keepsakes acquired by American and British service members following Operation Husky (the Allied invasion of Sicily) in 1943. Local artisans frequently melted down scrap aluminum salvaged from downed aircraft, engine blocks, and canteen hardware to cast these novelties to sell directly to troops stationed in the Mediterranean theater.Condition Details:Overall Condition: Excellent vintage condition with an authentic, uncleaned historical patina.Surface Texture: Features the signature light pitting, tiny cooling pockets, and soft gray luster unique to period-cast aluminum.Blade: The blade remains perfectly straight and completely intact.
