DESCRIPTION
Gorgeous South African Ndebele jocolo, a traditional beaded ceremonial apron worn by the women of the Ndebele people, an Nguni-speaking group, principally of South Africa. Richly beaded skirt-like panel, made with tiny glass beads sewn onto a goatskin backing. The five beaded "finger" panels have symbolic significance. A jocolois a ceremonial garment, typically worn by a married woman, especially after she has born children. It is a piece of formal attire, not meant for everyday wear.
CONDITION
Overall excellent. All beadwork intact. Some tiny holes in the upper apron, probably where a drawstring was attached, and some sewn patches in the upper apron (all visible in the images). A RARE AND UNUSUAL AFRICAN TRIBAL APRON
