Maciste is one of the oldest recurring characters of cinema, created by Gabriele d'Annunzio and Giovanni Pastrone. He is usually depicted as a Hercules-like figure, utilizing his massive strength to achieve heroic feats that ordinary men cannot. Many of the 1960s Italian movies featuring Maciste were retitled in other countries, substituting more popular names in the titles (such as Hercules, Goliath or Samson). The first in the series of 26 films starring Bartolomeo Pagano as strongman Maciste, made in the wake of his successful appearance in the early silent epic ‘Cabiria’ (1914).
Pagano was born in 1878 in Genoa and was working in the port as a stevedore when he was selected to appear in ‘Cabiria’ (1914). He was to play the role for the next 14 years in all 26 films of the series, concluding in 1927. Subsequently, he appeared in two historical dramas for director Baldassarre Negroni and then retired to Genoa to marry and raise a family. For most of the 1920s, he was one of the highest-paid actors in Italy.
