Vintage handwoven Mexican palm straw sombrero dating to approximately the 1950s. This example features an unusual embossed decorative paperboard band depicting a traditional campesino plowing with oxen beneath a mountain landscape, with the initials “I.O.L.” prominently incorporated into the artwork.
After extensive research, I have been unable to locate another sombrero with this exact embossed wraparound band. Unlike the more common leather, cloth, or vinyl hat bands found on vintage sombreros, this band is made from embossed varnished paperboard, making it a particularly interesting example of mid-century Mexican folk craft.
The sombrero is handwoven from palm straw with natural-fiber stitching throughout, decorative blue and brown cotton cord trim around the crown and brim, and matching original tie cords. The construction and materials are consistent with quality mid-century Mexican craftsmanship.
Features
- Handwoven palm straw construction
- Embossed varnished paperboard scenic crown band
- Farmer and oxen agricultural landscape motif
- “I.O.L.” initials incorporated into the original artwork
- Original blue and brown cotton decorative cords and ties
- Decorative stitched brim trim
- Likely made in western Mexico, circa 1950s
Condition
Good vintage condition with honest age and use. The straw remains structurally sound. The embossed decorative band is original and retains strong color and gloss with expected edge wear, small chips, and minor surface wear from age. The straw shows light discoloration and handling wear consistent with a vintage piece.
This is a wonderful display piece for collectors of Mexican folk art, Western Americana, vintage hats, ranch décor, or unusual mid-century travel souvenirs.
