According to JMU's institutional history, Madison College's men's basketball team adopted theDukesnickname in 1947 in honor of college president Samuel P. Duke. The institution officially changed its name from Madison College to James Madison University effectiveJuly 1, 1977. Therefore, a patch bearing both the Madison College name and Dukes identity belongs to the school's pre-JMU era.
