This mounted photo confounded me for awhile. I thought it might be a traveling theater group --- but it seems awfully big. So a deep dive found this. Take it "as is." But it sounds correct to me:
The banner seen in the foreground reads: "We take him or Molly is a Widow." That clearly refers to a Revolutionary War military quote from General John Stark before the Battle of Bennington in 1777. He said: "There they are boys! We beat them today or Molly Stark sleeps a widow tonight." So, this could to be a political rally in New England about winning the upcoming conflict (do or die) OR it could be a civic celebration in honor of the battle that bears the name of Bennington Vermont ---- or around the "Molly Stark Trail" in the area.
I'm going with a civic celebration. Fun image to research. It has a lot going on for it. Date to the 1880-1890s.
My inventory ranges from 19th century prints to abstract snapshots and Polaroids dating into the 1970s. All of my photographs are in varying condition. Please closely examine my photos of the photos for possible wear and tear. Please save me a seller and check in once in awhile.
