Condition:
Well-worn vintage condition with excellent authentic character. As shown in the close-up photos, there is visible paint distressing, chipping, and natural flaking, particularly around the green saddle area and along the painted borders. The wood itself shows light surface wear and minor scuffs consistent with age and use. There are no structural splits, deep breaks, or repairs. This piece is perfect for anyone looking for a genuine, perfectly imperfect rustic folk art look. Please review all photos closely to evaluate the condition before purchasing.
This piece is a classic piece of vintage Indian folk art from the Rajasthan region, known for its vibrant wood carving and handicraft traditions.
While these statues are frequently stylized with ambiguous elongated features that resemble either a horse or a camel, this particular design is widely recognized across antique and vintage markets as a Rajasthani festival or wedding horse.
Key Characteristics & Origins
• Artistry & Craft: It is handcrafted from local woods (often mango wood). Artisans carve the block shape and then hand-paint it using bright, bold colors.
• Styling Elements: The figure features a warm sienna/orange base tone, decorative line work across the legs and chest, and a painted green saddle adorned with geometric patterns. It is attached directly to a tiered decorative wood base block.
• Cultural Context: In Indian folk art, particularly in Rajasthan, hand-painted horses carry symbolic importance. They are deeply associated with celebratory events like weddings (representing the traditional groom's procession or Baraat) and are used as votive offerings or decorative pieces to bring good fortune to the home.
• Era: These specific stylized, geometric interpretations became highly popular mid-to-late 20th-century decorative items and exports, channeling a timeless, bohemian cottagecore aesthetic.
