Vintage Grand Canyon National Park Bear Cubs Mascots Postcard
Here is a fantastic piece of early national park history featuring a Native American man casually feeding two bear cubs named Blackie and Brownie at the Grand Canyon. These two were apparently the official canyon mascots back in the day, well before the park service realized that hand feeding wild apex predators might not be the smartest long term strategy. He is just sitting there calmly on a stool in his moccasins and a heavy turquoise squash blossom necklace handing over a snack. It is a wild snapshot of how differently things operated a century ago.
This card is unposted but someone went ahead and rubber stamped their name and California address right in the middle of the back. You will notice some standard minor edge wear and soft corners, which is completely expected for a piece of paper that has been floating around since the days when cars had wooden spokes. Take a solid look at the photos to see the exact condition before buying.
As an authentic vintage piece, this item may show typical signs of age, which can include minor edge wear, soft or bumped corners, slight yellowing, and light surface blemishes. Please carefully examine all provided high-resolution photos for the most accurate and definitive representation of the item\'s condition prior to purchasing. Trivia Corner
The heavy silver and turquoise jewelry the man is wearing is known as a squash blossom necklace. These became highly popular in the Southwest during the late nineteenth century and were frequently worn by Navajo artisans and guides who worked around the Grand Canyon to showcase their silver smithing skills to eager tourists.
