DescriptionThis little clock is so French and so vintage it looks as though it belongs in Amélie’s Montmartre apartment (which is at 56 Rue des Trois-Frères, incidentally). The clockface is a creamy colour which, with the passage of time, has turned that rather lovely shade of sepia that can only be created by decades, and it has bags of faded retro charm. It was produced by the very well-known Jaz company, and the company logo used between 1941 and the middle of the 1960s can be seen just above the 6 o'clock index; the little bird in the logo is a waxwing, known in French as le jaseur, which gives the company its name. The case is metal painted in a pale green and the clockface is a creamy colour which, with the passage of time, has turned a rather lovely shade of sepia and contributes to the authentic vintage look. It's a small clock at 10.5cm wide, designed more bedside use rather than on a shelf or mantelpiece like in our second image (which is AI, of course - sadly, we don't live in Amelie's apartment; all the other images are photos of the actual clock). It stands on three feet with the front two made of turned metal; one of these is wonky due to the clock being dropped at some point, which may also be when the glass cracked, but it would be easy to fix with the case dismantled to allow the shallow dent to be straightened out. There is patina over much of the surface, most notably on top - it could be argued that this adds to the charm, but personally I'd be tempted to match the paint colour, then sand it all off and repaint it. The screw-on keys to wind the clock and alarm and adjust the time are in place, but the one to adjust the alarm time is lost.Unfortunately, the clock is not currently working. We are not clockmakers and therefore cannot give an expert opinion on what's wrong, but removing the back allows the mechanism to be seen within the inner case and there is nothing obviously broken. If taken apart, cleaned up and treated to some fresh lubrication, it may prove to work again - and with just a little cleaning, it'll soon regain some Trente Glorieuses style.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
