Hopi Kachina (2003)

"Sipikne"

Carved by Sheldon Talas of Polacca..

Sheldon was from the Parrot Clan so the bird on the katsina has the feathers with colors of the macaw feathers.

Sipikne (also spelled Sipikni), an important Zuni Warrior or Guard Katsina that is frequently  danced at Hopi. Its Zuni name is Salimopaiyakya.

While the colors of his mask can vary (appearing in blue, yellow, or black depending on the cardinal direction he represents), the carved bird mounted directly on the top of his head is a constant and defining feature.

Key Characteristics & Role

Appearance: He typically features a tubular snout mouth, painted geometric designs or large flower blossom symbols on the sides of his head, a thick ruff of feathers around the neck, and an intricate bird figure attached to the top of his mask. He often wears a white kilt and carries yucca whips in his hands.

The Dance: Sipikne is known for an incredibly demanding, high-energy performance involving rapid, high-knee bounding. He dances in complete silence, accompanied only by the jingling of sleigh bells worn around his waist and knees.

Ceremonial Function: He acts as a disciplinarian and guard, ensuring order and proper behavior during important events like the Night Dances, Bean Dance, and Mixed Dances.
