Vintage African Carved Wood Mask — Lega-Style (DRC), Bwami Society Tradition
This carved wood mask displays features associated with the Lega peoples of the Democratic Republic of Congo and their Bwami society initiation tradition: a whitened kaolin-clay face, heart-shaped form, narrow closed/slit eyes, and incised geometric chevron patterning across the forehead and cheeks. The mouth is carved open with a row of small carved teeth. The reverse shows a series of small peripheral holes historically used to attach the mask to a raffia fiber costume or headpiece, along with an old age crack extending from the crown hole. Dry, chalky surface with expected wear, soiling, and undulating patina consistent with genuine age and use.
