BULOVA B-5410 FLIP CLOCK — THE FUTURE, AS IMAGINED IN THE 1970s
There was a brief and wonderful period when telling the time apparently required architecture.
Ordinary clock hands?
Far too conventional.
Instead, designers gave us little numbered cards that physically flipped over every minute, enclosed the mechanism behind smoked acrylic, wrapped the whole affair in brushed silver and sculpted plastic, and produced something that looked equally at home on a bedside table or aboard a spacecraft in a 1970s science-fiction movie.
Welcome to the Bulova B-5410.
This vintage Japanese-made electric alarm clock is a terrific example of the flip-clock era—and an object that manages to be a clock, an appliance and a piece of period industrial design all at once.
THAT FACE
This is why we're here.
Large white numerals sit against black flip cards behind a dramatically curved clear front panel. The Bulova name is neatly positioned to the right, while the alarm indicator occupies its own scale on the left.
No LEDs.
No LCD.
No glowing blue touchscreen asking to connect to your Wi-Fi.
Numbers. On cards. That physically move.
Wonderful.
The surrounding silver-toned face and sweeping curved profile give the clock a distinctly Space Age / Mid-Century Modern appearance—and then there's that gloriously period yellow-gold body hiding behind it.
Nothing about this clock is shy about when it was made.
THE CLOCK
The manufacturer's label on the underside identifies this example as:
BULOVA
MODEL: B-5410 SERIES
POWER SOURCE: AC 120V 60Hz 3W
MADE IN JAPAN
The body also carries the molded designation 5RD002.
The B-5410 is known among flip-clock enthusiasts for its Japanese Rhythm-type mechanism, a less-common mechanism recognized by collectors of these wonderfully mechanical timepieces. Flip Clock Fans
Period examples were made in multiple case colors, and the B-5410 has developed a following precisely because its case design is considerably more adventurous than the rectangular clock radios that populated so many nightstands of the era. One collector discussion put it rather succinctly: Bulova made some particularly interesting clock cases, and the B-5410 isn't something you see every day. Flip Clock Fans
We agree.
MORE THAN JUST A CLOCK
The B-5410 is also an electric alarm clock.
Controls on the body provide alarm and time-setting functions, while the large side control is marked for alarm setting. The display incorporates a separate alarm-time indicator to the left of the main hour-and-minute display.
And because this predates the age when absolutely everything required batteries, apps, firmware updates and a privacy policy, the clock has a good old-fashioned attached AC power cord.
Plug it into the wall.
That's the technological ecosystem. 😂
OPERATING CONDITION — PLEASE READ
The clock powers on.
Beyond confirming power, we have not fully tested its timekeeping accuracy, flip mechanism over an extended period, alarm function, setting controls or other functions.
It is therefore offered as:
POWERS ON — OTHERWISE UNTESTED.
We make no representation or guarantee regarding complete functionality or long-term timekeeping accuracy.
This is vintage electromechanical equipment approximately half a century old. A buyer should reasonably anticipate that cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, repair or other age-related servicing may eventually be necessary.
We have not attempted to disassemble, restore or service the clock.
We're leaving that decision to its next caretaker.
COSMETIC CONDITION
This is a genuine vintage clock and it has lived a life.
The photographs document its condition carefully.
There is visible cosmetic wear throughout, including scratches, scuffs and marks to the yellow/gold plastic body. The silver-toned surround shows areas of wear, particularly along the upper edge, and the clear curved front panel exhibits scratching and surface wear.
There are also marks and wear on the underside and rear body consistent with age and previous use.
We aren't attempting to disguise any of it.
In fact, that's exactly why we've photographed this clock from the front, sides, rear and underside. We want its next owner to know precisely which fifty-ish-year-old time traveler is arriving at the door.
Please enlarge and carefully examine all photographs. They show the actual clock being sold and form an important part of this item's condition description.
The attached power cord and plug are present as shown.
WHY FLIP CLOCKS ARE SO MUCH FUN
The flip clock occupies a wonderfully strange little chapter in technological history.
It's technically a digital display, because it communicates time using numerical digits rather than hands.
But there's almost nothing about the experience that feels digital in the modern sense.
The information is created mechanically.
A minute passes.
A card moves.
Flip.
Another minute passes.
Flip.
There is something delightfully physical about it—particularly today, when time usually appears as glowing pixels on whatever screen happens to be nearest.
Flip clocks have consequently become collectible design objects in their own right, particularly examples with strong Space Age and Mid-Century styling. Current collector discussions continue to single out the B-5410 and its unusual case, while vintage examples remain in the marketplace today. Flip Clock Fans
A NOTE FROM THE SELLERS
We're thinning out a personal collection of electronics, cameras and other interesting objects accumulated over the years.
And this one makes us smile.
Perhaps you're a vintage-clock collector.
Perhaps you're furnishing a Mid-Century Modern room.
Perhaps you're creating a 1970s interior and have finally realized that a modern digital alarm clock sitting beside the lava lamp simply will not do.
Perhaps you restore flip clocks and recognize the B-5410 immediately.
Or perhaps you've simply reached the point in life where you understand that watching a physical number fall into place once every minute is inexplicably more satisfying than looking at your phone.

It is scratched. It is unabashedly yellow. It has enormous mechanical numbers.
And after all these years, it still looks rather convinced that it came from the future.
