Horlacher
James Wise founded the Allentown Brewing Company in 1866; Fred Horlacher took over in 1882, and his son Frederick moved it and renamed it Horlacher in 1902. "Nine Months Old" Perfection Beer was aged for long-distance delivery, and Lehigh Valley old-timers still talk about that nine-month aging with real pride. The brewery outlasted every other major brewery in Allentown and closed in 1978.
Prohibition, and a Rumor
During Prohibition Horlacher kept going on near-beer and soft drinks. Old-timers around Allentown tell a different story too - that the brewing never fully stopped behind those doors, and the name that comes up is Dutch Schultz, the New York bootlegger. Nobody has ever put that on paper, but the story has stuck to the old brewery for decades.
