BUCK’S STATEMENT:
Long before wellness retreats were a trend, people traveled to Waukesha, Wisconsin for its legendary healing waters — the “Saratoga of the West.” Picture a successful Chicago businessman in the 1920s, exhausted by the noise of the stockyards and the constant hustle of the city. He takes the train north for fresh air and mineral baths said to restore vitality and soothe the soul. Between spa appointments and leisurely strolls through manicured park paths, he visits the famed Moor Mud Baths, where attendants promise rejuvenation through ancient remedies and the clean quiet of small-town Wisconsin.
As he prepares to return to the city — renewed in both body and ambition — he stops at the hotel desk and picks out a souvenir that isn’t meant to sit on a shelf, but to be used every day. A finely crafted brass letter opener, embossed with the proud seal of the Moor Mud Baths, a small reminder of solace found far from the roar of industry. For decades it likely sat on a tidy office desk, opening business correspondence while carrying whispers of lake breezes and peaceful mornings. Today, it survives as more than an object — it’s a tangible piece of American wellness history, and a personal relic from a time when people believed deeply in the restorative power of a journey.
