The QLVNCH (Quân Lực Việt Nam Cộng Hòa, "Armed Forces of the Republic of Vietnam") was the official military of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) from 1955 until the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. It was commonly known in English as the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) when referring specifically to its ground forces.
Overview
- Established: 1955
- Disbanded: 30 April 1975
- Allegiance: Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam)
- Commander-in-Chief: The President of the Republic of Vietnam
- Primary mission: Defend South Vietnam against the communist forces of North Vietnam and the National Liberation Front.
Branches of the QLVNCH
The QLVNCH consisted of four major branches:
- ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) – Ground combat forces.
- Republic of Vietnam Air Force (RVNAF) – One of the largest air forces in Southeast Asia by 1975.
- Republic of Vietnam Navy (VNN) – Coastal, riverine, and blue-water naval operations.
- Marine Corps – Elite amphibious infantry force.
Elite Units
Several formations earned reputations as South Vietnam's most effective combat units:
- Army of the Republic of Vietnam Airborne Division ("Nhảy Dù")
- Army of the Republic of Vietnam Ranger Command (Rangers)
- Republic of Vietnam Marine Division
- Army of the Republic of Vietnam Special Forces
- Territorial Forces:
- Regional Forces ("RF")
- Popular Forces ("PF")
Strength
At its peak in the early 1970s:
- Approximately 1.1 million personnel served in the armed forces.
- Following U.S. troop withdrawals under Vietnamization, the QLVNCH assumed primary responsibility for defending South Vietnam.
Equipment
The QLVNCH was equipped primarily with U.S.-supplied weapons and vehicles, including:
- M16A1 rifle
- M60 machine gun
- M79 grenade launcher
- M48 Patton and M41 Walker Bulldog tanks
- M113 armored personnel carrier
- UH-1 Huey helicopters
- A-1 Skyraider, F-5 Freedom Fighter, and A-37 Dragonfly aircraft
Combat Performance
The QLVNCH fought in nearly every major campaign of the Vietnam War, including:
- The 1968 Tet Offensive
- The 1972 Easter Offensive
- The 1975 Spring Offensive
Its performance varied considerably by unit. Airborne, Ranger, Marine, and many armored formations often fought effectively, while some conventional units struggled with leadership, logistics, and morale, particularly after U.S. combat forces withdrew and American military aid declined sharply after 1973.
Legacy
The QLVNCH ceased to exist after the capture of Saigon on 30 April 1975. Many of its veterans later emigrated to countries including the United States, Australia, Canada, and France, where veterans' organizations continue to preserve the history and traditions of South Vietnam's armed forces.
