VTG Japanese Daruma Kaga Hachiman Okiagari 3” Doll Folk Art Kanazawa Japan
Very clean and vibrant, beautiful, vintage piece. Signature sticker pasted on the bottom. This vintage toy doll has a very sweet face with a cute button nose. Okiagari means “self-righting,” referring to the doll’s rounded base that allows it to rise again after being gently tipped over. When it is shaken, one could hear a rattling sound similar as a maraca.
Please note: There is a hairline line scratch as seen on the 7th photo. Gold colored speckles are part of the artwork on this piece as seen on the last photo. Red cushion in the first picture is not included with piece.
This is one of the oldest toys made in the Kanagawa or Kaga region of northern Japan called a Kaga Hachiman Okiagari. It is all hand painted with vibrant colors over an orange-red. The doll has a very sweet face with a cute button nose. Historically, Kaga Hachiman Okiagari dolls were given as engimono (lucky charms). They were presented to women to ensure healthy childbirth, to newlyweds as blessings for harmony and growth, and to those recovering from illness as symbols of strength and renewal. An old belief even held that placing one inside a chest of drawers would help clothes multiply - a charming reflection of hope and abundance in everyday life.
This collectible piece is perfect for those interested in Japanese folk art and regional crafts. It makes a meaningful gift or a unique addition to a collection of traditional toys.
