United States Marine Corps commemorative framed print featuring the iconic Iwo Jima flag-raising image. Measures approximately 17” x 14” and features a wood frame with gold-tone trim, double matting, and a hanging wire.
The handwritten dedication on the back identifies Cpl. Nicholas Bournias (1924–2020) of Silver Spring, Maryland, as a WWII veteran of the 6th Marine Division. The division fought during the Battle of Okinawa, including the fierce fighting around Sugar Loaf Hill, and received the Presidential Unit Citation.
The dedication is dated February 7, 1999/2009? and was written by Capt. Stavros S. Moungelis, USMC (Ret.), a career Marine who attained the ranks of both Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-9) and Captain (O-3). Moungelis’s military service is also documented in the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, where he is listed as having served with Marine Helicopter Transport Squadron HMR-161 during the Korean War.
His engraved brass nameplate is attached beneath the note. The handwritten dedication, named recipient, brass plaque, and Library of Congress documentation give this piece meaningful personal and military provenance.
Frame and glass are in very good condition. The print shows a horizontal fold line across the center, visible in the photos. There is also a small piece of clear tape visible inside the frame near the bottom of the mat. Original backing, hanger, handwritten dedication, and nameplate remain intact and appear untouched.
