A standard military “woobie” is designed as a blanket-like liner, not as a wearable poncho, so it intentionally has no head hole. Its primary purposes are to:
- Tie into a waterproof poncho for warmth and insulation
- Wrap around the user like a blanket
- Serve as a sleeping-bag liner
- Provide a lightweight ground cover or emergency shelter
Keeping it as one continuous rectangular panel makes it more versatile and helps retain heat when wrapped around the body. The waterproof poncho is the garment with the head opening; the woobie attaches to it using its perimeter tie cords.Some aftermarket or modified liners have zippers, snaps, or a head opening, but those are not standard-issue designs.
