The U.S. Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune (NHCL) was established during World War II and became the principal Navy medical facility supporting Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and its Marine units. The hospital was originally commissioned as Naval Hospital New River on May 1, 1943, and was redesignated U.S. Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune in 1944.
A “MEDEVAC Team” associated with the hospital would have been a medical evacuation/receiving element responsible for getting wounded or seriously injured personnel from an evacuation point to definitive medical care.
What the team did
Typical responsibilities included:
- Receiving medically evacuated Marines and sailors
- Initial triage and stabilization
- Emergency/trauma treatment
- Coordination with ambulance and helicopter evacuation assets
- Preparing casualties for transfer to higher-level medical facilities
- Working with Navy Hospital Corpsmen, nurses, physicians and Marine medical units
The hospital\'s later history demonstrates this continuing role. For example, NHCL worked with 2nd Medical Battalion and VMM-264 in casualty-evacuation and en-route-care training, integrating medical personnel, flight crews and the receiving hospital
