This figure stands tall , holding a long, segmented ceremonial defense spear vertically in his right hand. Tucked firmly against his left side is a short, curved dagger housed in a form fitting sheath, signifying a warrior, front line soldier, senior military commander or court guardian within the West African sculptural tradition. The head displays three vertical lineage or scarification marks directly above the brow, a regional artistic convention denoting high social standing, maturity, and personal fortitude. He has a textured beard which traditionally signifies the wisdom and authority of an experienced elder or military commander. He wears a towering conical grid patterned helmet. The hat splits into distinct bird like finials , representing spiritual messengers or watchful guardians. It has a dark patina and stable construction characteristics of specialized mid 20 th century foundry work. Its slender proportions give it exceptional visual presence and display height. It measures 19” H.In perfect condition. It came from a family member that worked and lived in Ghana for 15 years and traveled extensively in Africa.
