This advertising mug was given out to psychiatrists by the Sandoz pharmaceutical company to promote its product, Mellaril. Mellaril was the second of the so-called \"major tranquilizers\" introduced in the 1950\'s (the first was Thorazine). They were mainly used in the treatment of schizophrenia, and are often labelled \"antipsychotics.\" It was withdrawn in 2005.
I first saw one of these in about 1970, but I\'m not sure when they first came out. Given that Mellaril is a tranquilizer designed to calm schizophrenics experiencing high levels of anxiety and erratic behavior, the \"Have a Happy Day\" slogan is beyond mere irony.
