This plate was commissioned in 1975 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the formation of the township of Central City in Santa Barbara County just north of Los Angeles. A few years later, the name was changed by the Post Office to Santa Maria to avoid confusion with Central City, Colorado. The city of Santa Maria has become famous for its fine wines and great barbecue.
World Wide Art Studios of Kovington, Tennessee only made 100 of these limited edition commemorative plates with an image of the sailing ship the Santa Maria. This is plate #34 out of those 100 and is marked on the back. It is in excellent condition and measures 9 3/8 inches wide.
