Rutile var. Sagenite (of Saussure) on Quartz
N.E. of Nogales, Santa Rita Mountains, Arizona
~ 7 x 5 x 3.5 x cm, 142.01 grams
This is a pretty example of sagenitic rutile from an ~unknown Arizona locality. Geometric rutile lattices cover ~all sides of the specimen. The quartz matrix exhibits sharp crystal faces in places, but I don\'t see any exposed crystal terminations - it looks like there might be some ~buried in the rutile.Dowis\' simple label gives the locality as written above, and I couldn\'t find any other records of similar material being found in the Santa Rita Mountains, so this piece is a bit of an oddity. Rare sagenite specimens are known from theSanto Nino Mine in the Patagonia Mountains, but the rutile there is found intergrown with platy muscovite, so the specimens from that locality look very different.Fun specimen. Good sagenite is known from only a handful of localities around the US.
Ex. John Dowis (1940-2023), Ex. Dana Slaughter, with labels from both.ShippingDomestic shipping via USPS, international shipping is available at cost. For smaller items, I can usually get economy shipping if you ask. I do not currently ship to China or Italy without special arrangements.
