DESIGNER HISTORY
Theodor Kärner (1884–1966) was a noted German sculptor and porcelain designer particularly admired for his highly naturalistic animal models. He worked extensively for Rosenthal and created numerous animal figures distinguished by their accurate anatomy, expressive poses and finely modeled details.
Kärner\'s animal sculptures remain among the most recognizable and collectible early Rosenthal porcelain designs.
PATTERN & DESIGN
Model #1533 depicts a young German Shepherd in a relaxed seated position with its large front paws extended forward. The puppy\'s raised head, alert expression and oversized ears capture the distinctive appearance and personality of a young German Shepherd.
The subtle hand-painted coloration emphasizes the contours of the body and finely modeled coat, while darker shading around the face brings additional expression to the puppy\'s features.
The combination of Theodor Kärner\'s naturalistic modeling and Rosenthal\'s high-quality porcelain production makes this an especially appealing example of German animal sculpture from the 1930s.
