An exceptional and highly collectible antique bone china lidded sugar box (or small ginger jar) manufactured by Wedgwood during its revered "First Period" bone china production era (circa 1812–1822).This piece features an exquisite, hand-painted "Japan" pattern heavily inspired by traditional Japanese Imari porcelain. The design boasts a vibrant palette of underglaze cobalt blue foliage, overglaze iron-red and orange blossoms, complex geometric border detailing, and fine hand-painted gilt accents over a soft cream-colored ground. The underside of the glazed base features the correct, period-accurate hand-painted pattern number 582 in red script, alongside a blue gilder's tally mark. True to early First Period production before the introduction of printed backstamps, the piece bears no impressed factory marks, making it a rare survivor from Josiah Wedgwood II's brief initial 10-year venture into porcelain production.
