A member of the Tewa Spider Clan who resided on First Mesa, Myrtle was the older sister of famed potter Garnet Pavatea and the mother of Harriet Nasonhoya.While Myrtle Young is widely renowned for creating utilitarian plainware piki bowls, this specific piece is an exceedingly rare decorated example featuring incredibly fine, sharp Sikyatki-Revival geometric slip designs.Pottery Details & Measurements:
  • Artisan Signature: Hand-signed clearly on the naturally polished bottom base as "Myrtle Young" in black slip.
  • Exemplary Craftsmanship: True to her legendary reputation, this bowl features exceptionally thin, gracefully formed walls that resonate like glass when tapped.
  • Design Motifs: Painted in traditional red and dark brown mineral slips over a warm buff clay body. The dynamic exterior band showcases iconic Hopi stylized bird tails, migration scrolls, claw elements, and stippled texture patterns.
