Up for sale is a fascinating piece of WWII-era maritime history: an authentic, matching pair of heavy brass finger bowls officially issued to the British Royal Navy. These heavy-gauge bowls were designed for exclusive use in the Officers' Wardrooms (the formal on-board dining halls for commissioned officers).Both bowls feature crisp, authentic military stamps on the underside: "VOC. NO 52105" (the official Royal Navy Vocabulary inventory control number), "M.M.S." (Midland Metal Spinning Company of Wolverhampton, England, the official wartime military contractor), and "ENGLAND". The bowls feature a beautiful, organic "orange peel" hammered texture.
Condition Report:These bowls are in honest, as-found vintage condition, showing excellent character from decades of age. The left bowl retains a beautiful golden-brass patina with minor surface tarnish. The right bowl shows heavier copper-carbonate oxidation and green verdigris scaling on the interior and base, which has been left untreated to preserve the historical integrity for collectors. No major dents or structural damage.
