The Public Garden, also known as Boston PublicGarden, is a large park in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts, adjacent to Boston Common. It isa part of the Emerald Necklace system of parks and is bounded by CharlesStreet and the Common to the east, Beacon Street and BeaconHill to the north, Arlington Street and Back Bay to the westand Boylston Street to the south.Boston’s Back Bay, including the land the garden sits on, wasmudflats until filling which began in the early 1800s.

The Garden was established in 1837,when philanthropist Horace Gray petitioned for the use of land as the "first public botanical garden"in the United States. In 1859, Alderman Crane submitted thedetailed plan for the Garden and received approval. Construction began quickly on the propertywith the pond finished that year and the wrought iron fence surrounding theperimeter erected in 1862.

A popular touristattraction is the Swan Boats, which began operating in 1877. They are a small boat with benches, ornamented with swan at the rear where the guide sits and pedals the boataround the pond. During the warmer seasons, the 4 acres pond is the home of a great many ducks, as well as of one or more realswans. Being no more than three feetdeep, it freezes during the colder months and was maintained for skating duringthe winter in the early years.

This cardwas published by the “Robbins Bros”, who were located in Boston andpublished view-cards of New England between 1907 and 1912.
