Description
A rare Georgian 18th century wooden diptych pocket sundial of oblong form, the hinged lid opens to 90 degrees and is secured in place by two original hook pins to the back.The interior faces have there original brightly coloured papers which are elaborately decorated with floral swags and fruit designs around the dial face and compass.The compass is complete with the original dial hand, glass and securing ring.The sundial has a string gnomon which can be moved to multiple degrees settings for different latitudes and many different countries.The lid closes down and is secured by the original hook pin with the hinge working perfectly.The back of the lid has its original paper with 48 major European city latitudes.This desirable pocket sundial is made to a high standard and would make a great present or addition to any collection.Dating to circa 1780 and would have been made in Germany.There are comparable examples in the Smithsonian Museum and the British Science Museum
