RARE 1950s Vintage BENNY THE BAKER Ceramic Figurine with Utensils
For your consideration is this wonderful old pie vent. Made in the likeness of a baker is rather fitting! This fella is made completely white, with only a burgundy hat & cuff bands, round black eyes, black eyebrows, a burgundy smile. He has an embossed collar and apron definition. There is a hole at the top of one hand to insert a "tester", and his hand which he holds upward, is made to hold a "pastry cutter". So you see that he is a multi-use kitchen helper. The back of his apron hem is incised with, "PAT PEN". The bottom has very nice high arches for good collection of steam to transfer through the top vent hole. A must for a pie vent collection.
A little bit of history from 50slucy.com, bizapedia.com and worthpoint.org: The Cardinal China Company began in 1946 as the Carteret China Company, at Carteret, New Jersey. In 1948, the Cardinal China Company was born. Cardinal China were known as the first US company to produce a spoon rest. In 1946, Benny the Baker with three red buttons was created. In 1950, he was created without buttons.
Maker: The Cardinal China Company, Carteret, New Jersey USA
Body Condition: Wonderful vintage condition. No cracks of note. There is age crazing throughout (see photos). There may be a couple of chip on the base front where there is no glaze (see photos). They could be manufacturing related. Unsure. As previously stated, there are both utensils with this pie vent. I have seen them for sale at times. Good color and gloss finish. Clean.
An excellent addition to your collection.
